Herbert Marvin Hoover, 81, of Des Moines, formerly of Lehigh, died peacefully on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. The services honoring Marvin's life will be 11 a.m. on Monday, December 12, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel in Fort Dodge with the Rev. Dennis Shepherd officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. The visitation is Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fort Dodge. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Marvin is survived by his children, Deborah (Leo) Magdelaine, Rockford, IL; Kris (Bill) White, Urbandale; Rod (Sue) Hoover, Norwalk; six grandchildren and two brothers-in-law, James Nordholm, Boone; and Leroy DeSmidt, California. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents, two brothers, Raymond Hoover and Verle Hoover, and six sisters, Verval Davis, Della Ewing, Hazel Biegtol, Velva Fevold, Lavonne Hoover and Reola Nordholm.
Herbert Marvin Hoover, the son of Albert and Edna (Crouse) Hoover, was born December 17, 1929 in Duncombe. At a young age his family moved to a farm near Lehigh.
Marvin graduated from Burnside High School in 1949 and he then assumed the duties of the family farm. On November 10, 1951, Marvin was united in marriage to Barbara Jean DeSmidt at The Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Marvin also drove a school bus for Central Webster Schools. In October 2009, Marvin and Barbara moved to Des Moines to live near children and grandchildren.
Marvin enjoyed watching sports and playing sports with his family. He especially treasured time spent with his family.
