Henrietta "Sugar" Macaulay quietly said goodbye to us all on November 28, 2011, following a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Sugar entered the world not so quietly on March 6, 1929, born to Henry H. and Mabel E. Rust in Passaic, New Jersey. She met and married John "Jack" Macaulay in 1948. They moved to Des Moines in 1953 and settled in on the East side. They found a special high spot on Hull Avenue where every year they, children, and friends would gather to watch the fireworks from the Iowa State Fair. Later, they built their house on that very spot. One of her special delights was the lights of Des Moines at night.
Sugar was a swimmer; a gourmet cook (timing was tricky but the taste was worth the wait!); an active leader in local politics; a volunteer for many causes; a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church; a lover of cats, flowers, sunsets and life. She was a wife, a sister, a mother, and a friend to so many. For 26 years, she shared the marvels of the Iowa State Capitol with visiting guests. When she retired, she and Jack enjoyed traveling to Massachusetts and Florida (oceans!).
She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Gary) Nichols of Des Moines, Marcia Macaulay (Mike Fralick) of Luck, Wisconsin and Michelle Malloy of Clearwater, Florida; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; sisters, Betty and Peggy; and son-in-law, John Malloy.
Sugar's family sends a special thanks to the staff members of Wesley Acres who provided such excellent care. In celebration of her full life, Sugar would have asked only for a happy memory and a smile. However, for those wishing to make a memorial contribution, she most likely would have suggested it be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Des Moines or Wesley Acres Good Samaritan Fund.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at  www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
