Bill, 90, passed away on June 25, 2012, at home. A family service is planned at a later date in Michigan. Per his wishes, his ashes will be interred in Des Moines.
Bill was born on July 8. 1921, in Woodburn, Iowa, to Olin and Lena (Powell) Carson. He grew up on his parents' farm in Osceola, where he attended school and learned farming.
He married Fern McConnell, the love of his life, on August 30, 1941, and was married for 59 years until Fern passed away in 2000. In his early years, he farmed with horses and won numerous state corn-picking contests. Bill loved to tell stories of these early days on the farm. He and Fern also owned a local gas station in Osceola.
Later they moved to Des Moines where Bill worked for John Deere for over 30 years before retiring in 1979. During these years they raised their three lively sons. He always enjoyed being with his family and friends, and especially loved being with his grandchildren and watching them grow.
Bill was well known for his home-made Christmas candy, overflowing garden and skill as a bowler. He was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1996. In 1961 Bill took first place in the National Bowling Congress Tournament that was held in Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fern, son Kenneth and siblings Leveda, Buck, Claudia and Jake.
Bill's memory will be cherished by his son Don and wife Amy, son Bill and wife Megan, siblings Roberta, Gene, Lea Ann and Shirley, 12 grandchildren, and several beloved in-laws, nephews and nieces.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
