Holm, Howard Lavern - 1925-2012

Howard L. Holm, 86, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 16, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, in West Des Moines, of which he was a member. Committal services will take place at 3 p.m. on Monday, at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.
Howard was born on April 18, 1925 in Tripoli, IA, the son of Charles and Bertha (Wedemeier) Holm. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943 and served during World War II. Howard married Bernita Homan on September 15, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Western Douglas, Plainfield, IA. After the war they lived in Tripoli, IA, moved to Wakefield, NE and then West Des Moines, IA in 1971. He worked for the US Department of Agriculture for 32 years as a Regulatory Officer.
Howard was a member of the VFW Post 4013 in Tripoli and also served as volunteer Fire Chief of Tripoli for a period of time. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all sports on television.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Bernita Holm of West Des Moines; two grandsons, Alex and Chris Holm and their mother, Allison Holm all of Rochester, NY; four sisters-in-law, Lucille Buhr of Sumner, IA, Dorothy Baker of Sun City, CA, Betty (Russell) Westmeyer of Waverly and Gladys (Glenn) Reif of Muscatine, IA; and several nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; four brothers; and his son, Bruce Holm on February 9, 2011.
The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines. There will be an additional visitation one hour prior to the service on Monday, at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to either St. Mark Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
