Carolyn R. Littrell, 85, passed away at approximately 7:05 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Iowa Methodist West Medical Center in West Des Moines. In agreement with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Carolyn will be privately interred at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel next to her husband, Loren whom passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2012 and was just interred on Friday, November 9, 2012.
Carolyn was born on September 3, 1927 at Cascade, Iowa, to Frank Joseph and Mary Ann (Rink) Otting. Carolyn had attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she met Loren Duane Littrell. The couple were united in marriage on December 27, 1950, in Cascade, Iowa and enjoyed almost 62 years together. Carolyn spent most of her life raising children and attending to the house but always ventured beyond serving for a brief period as Sacred Heart Church of West Des Moines' Women's Club leader. After the children were old enough, Carolyn served as secretary to an Iowa State Representative and worked in election campaigns and as secretary for Governor Terry Branstad.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by three sons, Brad Littrell of Monson, MA, Brian Littrell of Livermore, CA and Paul Littrell of Grandview, MO; two daughters, Lisa Littrell-Smiley and her husband, Stephen Smiley of Van Meter and Suzanne Conway of Gibsonia, PA; brother-in-law, Wilmer Littrell of Marshalltown, IA; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren on the way. In addition to her husband, Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Mary Jane Hewitt and Lucille Joan Fagan.
Carolyn had requested that, in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions should be made to the Salvation Army.
