Sylvia R. Johnson
Services were held for Mrs. Sylvia R. Johnson Monday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Laurens, with Rev. Roy Lewis officiating. Ardis Gustafson was the organist and Dennis Larson, soloist. Pall bearers were Kent Johnson, Jay Johnson, Steve Johnson, Brian Simonson, John Simonson, and Bob Simonson. Interment was held in Laurens Cemetery, Laurens. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of services.
Sylvia Ruth Weeks, daughter of Barbara Ellen Boothe and Warren W. Weeks, was born September 18, 1898, near Spring Hill, Iowa. She passed away October 28, 1993, at Pocahontas Community Hospital, Pocahontas, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 10 days after having suffered an apparent stroke at her home in Laurens earlier in the day.
The Weeks family moved to a farm south of Laurens in 1906. Sylvia attended rural schools in Pocahontas County, before graduating from the Laurens Consolidated High, School in 1916. She taught in; three different country schools in Pocahontas County, before being united in marriage to George William Elmer Johnson on June 26, 1918 in services at Laurens. They farmed in the Laurens area for many years. Mr. Johnson died on September 28, 1976, but Sylvia continued to live on the farm, until moving into Laurens in 1981.
Sylvia was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Neighborly Club and a 50 year member of Laurens Chapter #265, Order of the Eastern Star, all of Laurens.
Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Helen Chapman (Rueben), of Laurens, Mrs. Alice Simonson (Wendell), of Oxford; sons, Charles Johnson, of Laurens, Marvin Johnson (Mary), of Newell, Dr. Lowell Johnson (Jean), of Johnston, Dr. Wendell Johnson (Marilyn), of Waverly; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Maury, Ben, Leland, Richard, Raymond; and a sister, Cecile Freeman
