Nellie Mickalek, 101, died Friday, March 18, 1994, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 22, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in the Clinton Garfield Cemetery, Rolfe, Iowa.
The family suggests memorials to United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.
She was born Sept. 10, 1892, in Buckingham, Ill., the third child of Amelia Prussner Smith and George Franklin Smith. In the spring of 1895, she moved with her family to a farm near Rolfe, where she grew up. She graduated from Iowa State Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and also attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill.
On Sept 3, 1931, she was married to Arthur Mickalek of Bradgate, Iowa. They maintained a residence in the Rolfe community until 1945, when the family moved to Clear Lake, where she spent the remainder of her life. She enjoyed being in Clear Lake and has had many friends and acquaintances living in the community. She worked for many years at the Chappell Clinic and has been a member of the United Methodist Church since moving to Clear Lake. She was very active with various groups within the church.
In 1990, Nellie was honored as the oldest Rolfe High School alumni when she attended the all-school reunion that year; she still has a number of relatives who reside in Pocahontas County.
She enjoyed painting, a hobby which she began at the age of 80, as well as traveling. She was a past member of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, C. Louise Sellaro, of Canfield, Ohio, a granddaughter, Dawn Louise Ackermon, of Grand Cayman, B.W.I. and a grandson, Mark David Sellaro, of Denver, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, two brothers, Guy and Fred; and a sister, Clara.
Organist Mary Jane Reynolds accompanied soloist Richard Johnson.
Pallbearers were Warren Peitzke, Larry Day, Raymond Majorowicz, John Morgan, Richard Johnson, Leroy Simonson, Todd Hartsock.
