The sad news came to relatives and many friends here of the death of Gust Strobehn on Sunday, April 28, 1918, at Rochester, Minn., where he had gone about two weeks before for treatment and possibly an operation. He had been in poor health for four or five years on account of an inside goiter, which resulted in heart affliction. His condition became worse last week and his brother, Will, was called there last Friday. He passed away before the expected operation was performed.

Gust Strobehn was born March 10, 1870 [**other records say 1869] at Davenport, Iowa, and died at the age of 48 years, 1 month, and 18 days. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Strobehn, to South Dakota, at the age of five years, locating at Richland, Union county, in 1881.

In 1883 they moved to a farm in Portland township, Plymouth county, Iowa, where he had since resided. His parents passed away a number of years ago, and he and his brother, Will, have been farming together. He is survived by his brother, Will, and sister Bertha.

Mr. Strobehn was a man universally esteemed and respected for his clean, upright character, his generous hearted and friendly nature. He abhorred idleness and rejoiced in hard work. He was one of the most progressive and successful farmers in this section and was a first-class carpenter and mechanic.

As a road superintendent in Portland township, he rendered excellent service, and in all things was public spirited and a loyal citizen. Of Gust Strobehn it could be truly said that “None knew him but to love him, none named him but to praise.”

A host of friends will surely miss and mourn him, and all unite in sympathy to the bereaved relatives. The remains arrived here from Rochester, Minn., Tuesday morning, accompanied by Will Strobehn. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home, north of town, Rev. W. W. Tyrell, of the Akron M.E. church conducted the same. There was a large attendance of sympathizing friends in Riverside cemetery, where both his parents are at rest.
