DEATH SUMMONS HENRY W. JOHNSON EARLY SATURDAY

Was An Akron Resident for Past Forty-five Years Rites Held Monday

Henry W. Johnson, a resident of Akron for the past forty-five years, passed away quite suddenly at his home here at 7 o’clock Saturday morning, February 26, 1938, of cerebral hemorrhage, aged 78 years, 10 months and 12 days. Mr. Johnson had been in usual health, except for a slight cold for a few days. He was stricken as he sat at the breakfast table and passed away before medical assistance, summoned by Miss Marie Degan who kept house for him, could arrive.

Henry W. Johnson was born at Alton, Illinois, April 14, 1859, and grew to young manhood in that state. On April 26, 1885, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Schlueter at Litchfield, Illinois. This union was blessed with three sons and three daughters. Mr. Johnson was for a number of years employed in the coal mines in Illinois and also worked at the carpenter trade. He and his family came to Akron in1893, and this has since remained the family home.

He worked at carpentering here and also conducted a pool hall for a number of years. A man of upright character and industrious habits, a kind and considerate husband and father, a valued friend and neighbor, he will be sincerely missed in this community, where he has spent so many years of his life.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Freedom lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A. M., being made a master Mason June 4, 1923. He was also a member of Sioux City Consistory, No. 5, of the Scottish Rite of Freemanonry.

He was preceded in death by his wife on September 28, 1930. Left to mourn his departure are two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Anna Dodge, of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Larsen, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; George and William Johnson of Sioux City, and John Johnson, of Denver, Colo.; also by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They have the sympathy of the entire community in their sudden bereavement. All the children were present at the last rites.

The funeral was held at the home Monday at 2 p.m., with a large attendance. Services were conducted by Rev. Fred A. Meske, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, where the impressive Masonic burial rites were conducted by V. G. Adams, assisted by the officers and members of Freedom lodge. The pallbearers were E. M. Greenleaf, Ed. Jans, Walter W. Ross, Karl Bruhn, Chas. M. Allen and A. W. Lundberg.

Among the relatives coming from a distance to the funeral were: John Schlueter and daughters, of Madelin, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. E. Larsen, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; Wm. Johnson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur L. Dodge and family, George Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Whitehouse, all of Sioux City; John H. Johnson, of Denver, Colo., who traveled by airplane from Phoenix, Arz., to Omaha.
