Melvin Hitzemann, 87, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at the Akron Care Center in Akron

Graveside service will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Reverend Carla Nelson will officiate. Visitation with the family present at a time practicing social distancing and wearing a mask will be on Sunday, August 9, 2020 from 2:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. Melvin Lowell Hitzemann was born January 23, 1933 in Union County, South Dakota, the son of Adolph Louis and Alpha Regina (Johnson) Hitzemann. He attended country school in Union County and later finished grade school in Chatsworth, Iowa. He attended high school in Hawarden and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Eleanor Vipond on September 23, 1952 in Hawarden, Iowa. The couple farmed and raised livestock in Union County, South Dakota for many years. Following retirement, they moved to Akron.

Melvin was a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, South Dakota. Farming was Melvin’s life, even after his retirement, he enjoyed going out and checking the crops. Melvin and Eleanor enjoyed wintering in Texas for many years in the travel trailer.

Survivors include his wife of over 67 years, Eleanor of Akron; two children: Gerald Hitzemann of Akron and Renee (Bill) Benning of Plainfield, IA; 2 grandchildren: Leanne Hitzemann of Kemp, TX, and Levi (Trista) Benning of Plainfield, IA; a sister in law: Verla (Herb) Anderberg of Yankton, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Alpha Hitzemann; 2 sisters: Margaret (Norman) Hartman and a sister in infancy; a brother in infancy; and in laws: Don (Betty) Vipond and Shirley (Norman) Anderberg.
