Page 1Charles Smith, one of the oldest native born residents of Muscatine county passed away at his home in Moscow Tuesday morning at the age of 71 years. Mr. Smith was born in Muscatine county May 30, 1842. His death followed an illness of less than two week's duration and was due to pneumonia complicated by an affection of the heart. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the civil war serving for three years in Company A. of the Thirty-fifth Iowa regiment. He enlisted August 11, 1862 and was mustered out April 27, 1865. He is survived by his wife, eight sons and one daughter. The sons are: Daniel, Charles, Henry, James, Will, Lee, Grant and George Smith. The daughter is Mrs. George Cromer. One son Sherman preceded his father in death. One sister, Mrs. Martha Keever, of Elrick Junction, also survives him. Services to be held this afternoon at the M. E. church at Moscow.
