March 5, 1852The District Convention
We publish to-day the proceedings of the Judicial District Convention, held at Maquoketa, on Thursday of last week. They speak for themselves. It will be seen that Hon. T. S. Wilson, of Dubuque, is the candidate for District Judge; and through we are free to admit he was not our first choice, nor the first choice of the Democracy of Scott county, yet we recognize in him only the candidate of the party, nominated in accordance with the time-honored usages of that party, by a convention, which, so far as we have the means of knowing, expressed its views. Beyond the decision of that convention we cannot look; to attempt to do so, would be to involve the party organization in inextricable confusion hereafter. Every sensible man admits that the convention system is the only method by which a fair expression can be given to the will of the majority. And when nominations are made it is the duty of all to throw aside personal feelings and prejudices, and give them a cordial and hearty support. Such a support we shall give to Judge Wilson, while we may be pardoned for expressing the hope that the time will come when the discovery will be made that men competent to fill public offices can be found in other places besides Dubuque.
