Charleston, April 14 – Sunday.

Five of Maj. Anderson’s men were wounded – one, it is thought, mortally.

After the surrender, a boat with ten men was sent from the ships of war outside to Morris Island, requesting permission for a vessel to enter to take off Maj. Anderson’s command.

It is reported that Maj. Anderson surrendered because his quarters and barracks were destroyed and he had no hope of reinforcement. The fleet lay by thirty hours, but couldn’t or wouldn’t help his men, prostrated by over-exertion.

The explosions heard in Fort-Sumter were caused by shells igniting. The barracks caught fire three times, from the hot-shot of Fort Moultrie, laying everything in ruins but the casemated guns. The dismantled walls look like a honeycomb.

Fort Moultrie is badly damaged, and the houses on Morris Island are riddled.

A boat was sent from Fort Sumter, tonight, to officially notify the fleet of the surrender. It is not known what will be done with the fort and the vanquished.
