Born in 1849 at Thomasgård, Skepperstad, Jönköping, Sweden. He came with his mother, father, 3 brothers and a sister to the United States, arriving in the summer of 1857 and settling in Geneseo, Illinois.
In 1864, at the age of 15, he joined Company K of the 139th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. At the close of the Civil War, he went back to Geneseo and married Anna Maria Youngquist on July 9, 1874.
In 1877, August moved with his family to Stanton, Iowa and began farming. He was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran church in Stanton.
At the time of his death in August 1938, he was one of only three remaining Civil War veterans in Montgomery county.
