LoviliaGeorge Gilbert, 76, of Lovilia died Friday, April 1, at Hospice of Wapello County.
George was a retired funeral director having owned and operated funeral homes in Lovilia, Albia, and Bussey since 1961.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, two sons, Mike (Jackie), Pat (Teresa), one daughter, Angie (Mitch) McCombs all of Lovilia, and one sister, Rosemary Parker of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Sherman and Frances Gilbert of New Sharon, and two brothers, Max of New Sharon and Gene of Leon.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia. Burial will be at Lovilia Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be all day Monday at Sinnott-Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lovilia with the family present from 4 to 8 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice, Lovilia Community Building or Lovilia First Responders.

George was born July 23, 1934 at Grinnell, Iowa, the son of George S. and Frances Essex Gilbert. He graduated from New Sharon High School and the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He married Bonnie Gilliland of Oskaloosa. They lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and Grinnell, Iowa prior to moving to Lovilia in 1961. George owned and operated Gilbert Funeral Homes in Albia, Lovilia and Bussey prior to retiring. He also operated Gibert Ambulance service for the first 27 years he was in Lovilia.
He served in the United States Army in Korea. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, Forty & Eight of American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia.
George is survived by his wife Bonnie, two sons Mike (Jackie), Pat (Teresa), one daughter Angie (Mitch) McCombs all of Lovilia and one sister Rosemary Parker of Des Moines. Nine grandchildren, Nikki Gilbert (Jake) Reed of Bussey, Heather Gilbert (Justin Pettyjohn) of Hiteman, Mikey (Stephanie) Gilbert statined in Spain, Ricky, Jacquelyn and Tatum Gilbert of Lovilia, Landon of Albia and one step grandson Tony Kaster of Marshalltown. Nine great grandchildren Brayden, Bella, Chase, Gunner, Mackynzie, Carter, Kelby, Hayden and Lane, Darcy McCombs, a very special family friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Max of New Sharon and Gene of Leon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday, April 5th, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lovilia with burial at Lovilia Woodlawn Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Howard Cessna Post 136 of Albia. Visitation will be all day Monday at the funeral home in Lovilia with the family present from 4-8 pm with a wake service scheduled for 7 pm.
