S. V. Papich Dies Last Wednesday

Operated Grocery Store Here For 22 Years

S. V. Papich of Albia, formerly of Lovilia, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, March 5, at seven o'clock in St. Joseph’s hospital at Ottumwa, where he had been a patient one day. He had been critically sick a few days.

Mr. Papich had not been in very good health the past year, and was critically sick in the University hospital, Iowa City, in January, 1946.

Stanislav V. Papich, son of Nick and Antonia Papich was born November 13, 1879, in Croatia, Jugoslavia, and was aged 67 years, three months and five days.

He came to the United States in 1904 and settled at Rathbun, Iowa. He later went to Colfax, where he was married to Angeline Polich on July 16, 1905.

The Papich family lived in the Colfax community until 1914 when they moved to Albia, where they lived until 1918, when they moved to Lovilia.

Mr. Papich opened a grocery store in the south part of Lovilia, where he also had a home built. He operated a store here until 1940 when he turned over the store management to his son, Stanley C. Papich and he and Mrs. Papich moved to Albia, where they bought a home and had since lived.

As a merchant he was successful. In business dealings he was fair and considerate with all. He was a benefactor to many in this community and his kindness will be a pleasant memory to a wide circle of friends, who with his family, mourn his passing.

He is survived by his wife Angeline, three daughters, Mrs. Walter Weatherstone of Albia, Mrs. Stefana Larson of Des Moines, and Sister Mary Marcella (Frances) of Bettendorf; four sons, Stanley C. and David of Lovilia, Donald at home and Phillip with the army in Florida; 10 grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, March 8, at 9 o'clock, in St. Mary’s church at Albia, a requiem mass being said by his pastor, the Rev. L. Heinen. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery.
