Monroe CO. News April 8, 1898

Chrissie B., daughter of H.D. and M.M. Bailey, was born in Lewis county W.VA.,March 23, 1877. Mr. Bailey came to Monroe county with his family a wife and seven children, two girls and five boys, in the month of December, 1892. In February 1896. he moved to Sullivan county, Mo., where he now resides. While living in Monroe county Miss Chrissie, his second daughter, became acquainted with Clark Bates, and on December 31, 1896, they were married at the home of her parents in Sullivan county, Mo., after which they came back to Monroe county and lived in a comfortable and cosy home, the house being built by Clark's own hands and decorated and trimmed by the hands of her, whom, we now miss so much and who was the most attractive feature of all the house. To know her was to love her, and to say that she was a model housekeeper, a good friend and an affectionate wife is a very modest tribute of respect to pay to her memory. All had been sunshine and happiness with these since their union up till the time of her death, Thursday morning, March 31, 1898. She prepared that breakfast and ate as hearty as usual, when a few minutes later she complained of pains in her arms and requested her husband to rub them, saying "rub my shoulders, too," which he did. "Now," said she, "it has left." She bent slightly forward, then violently backward and all was over, dying at the age of 21 years and 8 days. The funeral was held at the home on Saturday, April 2d at 10 o'clock a.m.. Rev. John Marcrom, of Albia, officiating, after which the body was laid to rest in the Cuba cemetery by a host of friends who mourn with this sad and broken hearted husband. May Him, who doeth all things well, comfort in the hour of deepest sorrow is our prayer.
The vacant place, the empty chair.

Like the setting of the sun.
We'll trust Thee ever, Father dear.
And say "Thy will be done".
