R. D. Hannam Dead

The death of R. D. Hannam took place Monday morning, June 4th.

The deceased was eighty-eight years of age. He was born in England, Nov. 30, 1829.

Later in life he moved to Canada, where he was married to Johanna Lynch. In 1869, he and his family came to Melrose, Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his life. His wife died August 21, 1883.

Mr. Hannam was the father of ten children, all of whom are living, except Samuel, who died thirty-two years ago.

He is survived by five sons and four daughters, Mrs. L. B. Coady, of Albia, Richard, of Melrose, James, of Spokane, Wash., Henry, Mrs. W. J. McEniry, John, of Melrose, Martimer, of Minneapolis, Minn., Hanna, and Mrs. J. C. Moore, of Sioux City.

He married Elizabeth Conway twenty-three years ago, who preceded his death, at the Sisters hospital in Peterboro, Canada, two weeks ago.

When a young man, he was a convert to the catholic religion and lived as a faithful catholic until death. He received the last sacraments a few days before his death.

The funeral took place Wednesday morning at St. Patrick’s church where solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Ref. Father McCormick, who also pronounced the absolution and preached the funeral sermon. Rev. Father McCormick was assisted in the Mass by Rev. Father Walsh, of Albia, as deacon, and Rev. Father Murphy, of Georgetown, sub-deacon.

The funeral was attended by a very large congregation. Many friends from a distance attending.

Mr. Hannam was one of the pioneers of this county, and assisted by his means and advice the building of two churches in Melrose. He was a man of honor and trust and always held the respect of all. He will always be remembered by the parish of Melrose as one of its greatest benefactors.

His six grandsons acted as pall bearers. Matt and Joseph McEniry, Samuel Coady, Richard and Arthur Hannam.

Interment was made in Mt. Calvary cemetery beside his wife and son, Samuel, who preceded him many years ago.
