BRIEF ACCOUNTS OF SEVERAL PROGRESSIVE CHURCH COMMUNITIES

St. Mary's, Hiteman

Rev. M. F. Nolan of Centerville was the first priest to visit Hiteman.

The first Mass was said at the home of Mark Greeley in 1901.

On later visits service was held at either Greeley's home or the home of some other members.

Father Ade also came a few times, and then Father Guinan took charge and in 1907 built the church, which is a frame building 24 x 36 feet and 14 feet high, at a cost of about $1,200.

Father Walsh, the present pastor at Albia, is now attending to the spiritual needs of the Catholic people of Hiteman, about 25 families.

Among those who worked hard and faithfully for the establishment of the church in Hiteman are Mark Greeley, Bill Glentzer, Dan Mahoney, Thos. Gooley, Wm Frew, James Barry, Mrs. James Nicholson, Diamond Early and Lue Foster.

The first Mass was said in the new church on Christmas day, 1908.

The church is entirely out of debt and a balance is in the bank to the credit of St Mary's congregation.

Mass is said here on every other Sunday at 8:15 a, m, and on all holy days.

There are but few counties in Iowa that can show the progress made in Monroe county.

At the present time there are six congregations with four pastors and the result of the earnest efforts being made by these zealous priests are sure to bear fruit and it is safe to predict that the near future will see at least two more priests with probably three or four new churches.

Priests and people are working together for the honor and glory of God and the welfare of His church.
