ConductorKenneth Carpenter, director of the Osage high school band, will conduct the Mason City Municipal band in two numbers at the regular Sunday night concert at 8 p.m. at East park. He will direct the musicians in "Mannin Veen' by Haydn Wood and "Americans We" by Fillmore.
Carpenter was a member of A. R. Edgar's Roosevelt high school band in Des Moines in the early 30's and competed in national contests, playing the alto saxophone. He was featured soloist in the Drake university band for five years and had a campus orchestra.
In the summer of 1939 he went to Europe as leader of a ship dance band for the Cunard White Star lines. The following year he was guest soloist on the Westinghouse "Musical Americana" broadcast which featured Deems Taylor, Milton Cross and Raymond Paige and his 100 Men of Melody.
Carpenter served four years in the army in World war II, three of which were in command of and directing an air force band in Texas and the China-Burma-India theater.
Following the war he taught in Des Moines and Osage. Two years ago he received his master's degree from Drake university and in the same year received the Osage Community Service award.
He is president of the Iowa Bandmasters association, a past editor of the Iowa Bandmaster magazine, a church choir director, director of the Chamber of Commerce men's chorus, song leader of the Osage Rotary club and Junior Chamber of Commerce, a Sunday school teacher, and co-sponsor of a church youth group.
His hobbies are fishing, boating, photography, model airplanes and in his "spare time" listening to high fidelity recordings.
