Dr. Maurice A. Hansen is one of the leading physicians and surgeons of Osage, whose ability is widely acknowledged by the profession throughout this section of the state. He ranks high in the regard of his colleagues and contemporaries and his efforts have been attended with a measure of success that is indicative of his thorough understanding of the scientific principles which underlie his work.
He was born in Racine county, Wisconsin, in 1873. His father, John Hansen, was of American birth but of Norwegian parentage, as was his wife, who bore the name of Caroline. John Hansen spent the greater part of his life in Albert Lea, Freeborn county, Minnesota, where he engaged in business as a hotel proprietor, liquor dealer and farmer. He passed away in the year 1899, and his widow is now living in California. They were the parents of four children: Mrs. Joseph Dominick, living in Albert Lea, Minnesota; Mrs. Ole Odden, of Osage; Mrs. Eveline Hansen, who is superintendent of drawing in the schools of Virginia, Minnesota; and Maurice A., of this review.
The last named acquired his education in the schools of Albert Lea and attended the medical college of Indianapolis, Indiana, from which he was graduated, winning his professional degree. He afterward spent one year in Berlin, Germany, where he continued his studies, and upon the expiration of that period he returned to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he became the assistant of Dr. George Eitel of the Eitel Hospital.
In the year 1898 he became a resident of Osage, where he has since practiced his profession, winning for himself a very enviable and notable position among the leading physicians and surgeons of this section of the state. He has made a specialty of women's diseases and of chronic diseases and has also gained distinction in surgery. At the same time he continues his general practice and in connection with Dr. Wiggins he has superintended and managed the Woods Hospital of Osage since 1916.
He has one of the best equipped offices and operating rooms in the city. His suite of rooms used for office purposes covers almost two floors of the building in which he is located and is supplied with every modern facility for professional work. Dr. Hansen has other important interests and connections.
In 1913 he formed a partnership with H. L. Wilson, of Osage, for the conduct of an important business under the name of the Osage Stone Company. He is a partner of William Constantine, of Orchard, Minnesota, where they are conducting a drug business under the style of the Orchard Drug Company. His interests are thus wide and varied and each one is capably and successfully directed.
In 1914 Dr. Hansen was united in marriage to Miss Alice McCoy, a native of Winona, Minnesota, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. McCoy, the former a conductor on the Great Western Railroad for a period of thirty-five years and one of the old-time residents of Winona. Neither he nor his wife, however, are now living.
In the social circles of the city they are widely known, and Dr. Hansen's professional position places him among the foremost physicians and surgeons of northern Iowa. He is most conscientious in the performance of all professional duties, is most careful in the diagnosis of his cases and is seldom if ever at fault in foretelling the outcome of disease. He reads broadly and thinks deeply and at all times keeps in touch with the trend of modern professional thought, research and investigation.
