Funeral Services for Mrs. J. M. Smith

Funeral services for the late Mrs. J. M. Smith of Collins on Thursday afternoon. At two p. m. short services were held at the home and at 2:30 at the Methodist church with her pastor, the Rev. Chas. Hohanshelt in charge. Three songs "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me" were sung by a ladies quartette, composed of Mrs. L. M. Hall, Mrs. G. C. Fish, Mrs. H. R. Sokol and Mrs. L. D. Holland with Mrs. E. R. Cope at the piano.

The floral offerings were beautiful and were a must testimony of the love and esteem in which she was held by her relative and friends They were cared for by a group of nine, three nieces from State Center and six friends from Collins.

The church ceremony at Collins was followed by a service at the Brintnall funeral home at State Center, the childhood home of the deceased, with burial in the State Center cemetery.

Pall bearers were Byron Keagle, H. R. Sokol, E. L. Shonk, G. C. Fish, R. D. McCord and Wm. Carver.

Ruth Figgins, daughter of Joseph and Agnes Figgins, was born Aug. 2, 1894, at Washington, D. C. When very small, she moved with her family to Pittsburgh, Penn., and it there that her father died.

At the age of ten she moved with her mother and two brothers to State Center and it was there she grew to womanhood.

She graduated from the high school in 1912 and later attended the Greely school of Elocution at New York City. She was married in 1918 to J. M. Smith of State Center and they made their home for a number of years at Maxwell and Lacona, coming to Collins in 1928.

She is survived by her husband, a daughter Janet, two brothers, James Figgins of State Center and Dan Figgins of Des Moines and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Smith took an active part in the civic and social life of this community; giving of her time and talents to the Methodist church of which she was a member, the P. T. A., the Garden club and the Priscilla club. Although her health was failing for some time she never complained and performed her many tasks in her kindly pleasant way endearing herself to al who were privileged to work with her.

Her condition became alarming a week ago and she was taken to the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines where every thing possible was done to strengthen the weakness of her heart but to no avail, and at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday she passed from this life, leaving a sadden community.

Many relatives and friends from a distance were present at the services Thursday afternoon to pay their last respects to one whom they had known and loved.
