Alveta V. Boggess, 91, died Thursday in Oskaloosa.

She was born May 14, 1918, in Lacey, the daughter of Henry and Hazel Russell Hiemstra. She graduated from the Lacey High School with the class of 1937. She was married to Earl Merrick in 1937 in Missouri, and he died in 1945. On November 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to Bert Boggess in Oskaloosa. Together they farmed west of Rose Hill.

She loved antiques, and worked with Maxine Gray at Maxine's Hen House antique store. She was active in the old Wright Union Church and enjoyed quilting with the Ladies Aid group. She made many quilts for her children, grandchildren, and many others. With her needle and thread, she clothed her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many others. She was loved by all, and donated much of her handiwork to the underprivileged and homeless.

Survivors includes her husband, Bert Boggess of Oskaloosa; two sons: Max Merrick of Apache Junction, AZ and John Boggess of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Marilyn Jacoway of Ankeny; six grandchildren: Fred, Rick, Sandra, and Michael Allgood, and Zachary and Jared Boggess; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister: Darlene Strasser of Oskaloosa; and a brother: Roland (Patty) Hiemstra of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law: Carmel Hiemstra of Peachtree City, GA; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son in law: Gary Jacoway; two brothers: Clifford and Jasper Hiemstra; and a sister: Virginia Baxter; and a brother-in-law: Howard (Swede) Strasser.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be present Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.

Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice for the new Serenity Hospice House.
