James Milton Vance, 90, of Eddyville died December 24, 2011 at his home.
He was born April 8, 1921, at Cricket, Iowa, to Milton Earl and Edna Hatfield Vance. He graduated twelfth grade at Kirkville, Iowa.
Shortly after graduation, Jim entered the U.S. Navy in 1941. He was injured at Pearl Harbor, recovered and returned to service until the end of the war.
Jim married Mabel Evans February 21, 1947 in Oskaloosa. Jim and Mabel were married 63 years before she died June 16, 2010.
Jim was a welder for Martin Marietta for many years. He was a member of the American Legion #418 of Eddyville, the VFW of Ottumwa; DAV of Oskaloosa; and a 50 year member of the Eddyville Masonic Lodge #74. He loved to work with and refinished furniture.
He is survived by his daughter, Patricia "Patty" Adams of Eddyville; and daughter-in-law, Catherine Vance of Ankeny. Jim is also survived by two grandchildren, Gary Adams of Eddyville and Carolyn (Adam) Hayes of Indianola; and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Adelia Hayes.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel; one son, John Vance; two sisters, Marcellia Lorenson and Donna Webb; and one brother, Ronald Vance.
Funeral services for Jim will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel; with Rev. Dennis Durst officiating. Burial will follow services at Highland Cemetery with military flag presentation provided by the V.F.W. of Ottumwa. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 26, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jim's family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday evening. A memorial has been established for the Eddyville Fire Department.
