George "Skip" Kirby (1912-1999)

George I. "Skip" Kirby, the son of George M. and Amelia Kitzman Kirby, was born Thursday, October 17, 1912 in Mahaska County, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during World War II. on June 2, 1946 he was married to Kathryn "Kate" Steen at Greenville, South Carolina. Early in his life Skip farmed, then later he worked for Kemp Produce in Rose Hill, but lastly, he worked for the old Ideal Manufacturing Company in Oskaloosa for nearly 20 years until retiring. In retirement, Skip worked part-time at Cablevey in Oskaloosa. He was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church, the American Legion, the Rose Hill Knights of Phythias, and the Rose Hill Ruritan Club.
On Wednesdsay, August 18, 1999, Skip died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 10 months, and 1 days.
He is survived by his wife, Kate Kirby of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Kathy and Bill Hicklin of Solon, Iowa; a brother Hillard Kirby of Camdenton, Missouri; and a sister Phyllis Bunting of Oskaloosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Delmar and Marvin Kirby, and a brother in infancy; and 4 sisters: Zella Briggs, Leona Kirby, Bertha Belzer, and a sister in infancy.
Funeral Service was held on Saturday, August 21, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, Iowa. with Rev. Ralph Sprunk presiding. Interment: Forest Cemetery, Companion Garden II.
