Robert B. Hanson, 79, a retired employee of the Bureau of Census died at AAMC in Fredrick, MD on Thursday, November 20, 1997.
Mr. Hanson was a native of Minnesota. He was a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, IA. After obtaining a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1941, he worked for a short period at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New Sharon, and then served in the western Pacific with the 25th Infantry Division. After leaving the service in 1946, he was employed with the Bureau of Census until 1974, the latter portion of that time as an Assistant Chief of Statistical Methods Division. He received the Department of Commerce Meritorious Service Award (Silver Medal) in 1957 and the Gold Medal in 1973. He was a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He retired from government service in 1974 and was associated for 10 years as a consultant with Westat, Inc. of Rockville, MD.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a brother, James E. of Minneapolis, MN; two daughters, Barbara Walton of Augusta, GA and Carol Hennessy of Annapolis, MD; and two granddaughters.
Interment will be in New Sharon. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. (New Sharon Star, New Sharon, Iowa, November 27, 1997)
