Page 3William Ogburn, son of Hartwell and Frannie Ogburn, was born July 23, 1834 near Alexandria in Madison county, Indiana. He departed this life October 12, 1921 at his home near Peru, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 20 days.
He came to Iowa in the fall of 1854 and soon after was married to Miss Annis (Anis) Ray. To this union were born six children: Calvin, Walter, Willis, Luella, Jennie, and Arthur. His wife preceded him in death September 8, 1883 and in 1885 he was married to Mrs. Nancy J. Simmons. To this union were born two sons, Alvin R. and Harley R. He was a member of the Elm Grove M. E. church in its early organization and was later a member of the Christian church.
He was stricken with paralysis in 1910 and again in 1918, but he raised a large garden every year until this year, that was the pride of the community. He was one of the early settlers of Madison county, having spent 67 years of his life here. He helped to build the first Buffalo mill and hewed the necessary gears from white oak loan to run the mill, and many stone school houses dotted the land in the early days that were the work of his hands. Some of them are still standing. He laid the stone foundation for the first court house in Madison county.
He was a patient and silent sufferer in his last days, greeting the end by saying “I have lived long enough and all is well with me.” He is survived by his wife, four sons Walter, Calvin, Ivan and Harley R. and one daughter Luella; and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Shannon and interment was at King cemetery.
