Juanita Elzene Montgomery Hutchings was born October 23, 1921 in a farmhouse in Lucas County, Iowa. She passed away May 18, 2002 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 80 after complications from diabetes.
In the spring of 1941, she was united in marriage to Jay B. Hutchings, who passed away in 1986. Elzene and Jay had four children.
Elzene lived in and around Williamson all her life. Her claim to fame was her cooking ability, which many people will recall from Leone's Tavern in Chariton and the Williamson Tavern. Elzene's favorite pastimes included playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Eagles.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lura (Apgar) Montgomery and William Thomas "Casey" Montgomery; a brother, Bill Montgomery and a sister, Leone Frank.
Elzene is survived by her four children and their families: Bob and his wife Sharon of Pleasantville, Monty and his wife Sharon of Chariton, Ricky and his wife Jeannie of Williamson, Vicky and her husband Jim Greeley of Newton; eight grandchildren: Scott, Brent, Monty, Marci, Stacie, Jeremy, Alicia and Curt; nine great-grandchildren: Tessa, Josie, Casey Meghan, Jacob, Abigail, Hunter, Kolton and Kaitlyn; two step-great-grandchildren: Leah and Danielle; a sister, Louise Briggs of Williamson and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Tyree officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Curt Greeley, Monty Hutchings, Jeremy Hutchings, Brent Hutchings, Scott Hutchings and Alicia Hutchings.
