The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, May 20, 1909

Rev. E.R. BENNETT and CLEVELAND OTTO were fishing on the banks of
Whitebreast recently and on returning home they met what they supposed to be
a wild cat. MR. BENNETT threw a rock at the ferocious little animal killing
it instantly, but the rock hit a tree and bounded back, striking MR. BENNETT
on the head knocking him almost senseless. It made him think of the old
adage killing two birds with one stone. The next day MR. BENNETT
accompanied by AL ROSS and FRANK GARDNER, TOM NORRIS, CARL KIRTON and DAVE
BRECKENRIDGE, went to the secluded spot, thinking they might find the den
where the animal lived. The boys all had a curiosity to see the dead wild
cat before making any further explorations, and to their astonishment DAVE
BRECKENRIDGE at first sight recognized the cat as the old pet house cat that
had been left with him by Major GREEN a few years ago.
