THE CHARITON HERALD
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 1, 1886

Last Friday night, Mr. Robert Hatfield was struck by the engine of freight train at Russell and so badly injured that he died in a few minutes, while his companion, Mrs. Patterson, an aged lady, was seriously injured.

Mr. Hatfield had gone to the depot to meet friends who were coming on the night train. As soon as the rear coach of the train had passed from them, they started to the depot, having to cross one track to reach it.

At the moment they stepped upon the track, a freight train, going east, came along and caught them, hurling both some distance to one side. Mr. Hatfield was picked up and carried into the depot, and medical assistance summoned, but to no avail.

Mrs. Patterson was serious, but it is hoped not fatally injured.
