'Two Men Stabbed in Lucas County Within the Past Week -- Neither Will Die.'

On last Friday morning Dr. W.D. Stumbaugh, a practicing physician of Lacona,
was mysteriously slugged and stabbed along the road about a half mile north
of Wheeler's bridge six or seven miles northwest of Chariton. The most
serious cut was over his heart, and while it looked serious for a while, it
is now thought that the doctor will recover. He does not seem to be able to
give a very clear account of the affair. He says he was called to a case in
that neighborhood by letter, but could not make out who wrote the letter.
Along the roadside near the bridge he was slugged unconscious by someone
creeping up from behind, and that is the last he knows of what happened
until he woke up lying in the creek. He was able to get into his buggy and
go to the Stewart house, where he found help, and was taken to his home.
Bloodhounds from Agency were taken to the scene, but could make nothing from
the tracks, and no definite clue to the perpetrator of the deed has been
found.

On Saturday night Chas. Perry and Ed Barler, two young men who are thought
to have been drinking, got into a fight just north of Jas. Snuggs' implement
store, and Barler stabbed Perry with a pocket knife, inflicting a bad gash
just over the heart. It is not thought that it will prove serious unless
his clothing infected the wound. Perry is better known as "Dad" Perry and
has been employed in Bown & Son's horse barn.
