BURGLARY. -- Tuesday night of last week, the houses of Messers SILAS CORA
and J.W. SHEPHERD, of Whitebreast Township, on the Oscola (sic) road a few
miles west of town, were entered by a couple of men, and robbed of the
following: from MR. CORA were taken a watch and ten dollars in money, and
from MR. SHEPHERD $103.00 in greenbacks. One house was entered by a door
that had not been locked, and the other one by a window. No one was aroused
at either house, and the theft not known until morning, when it was
discovered that the house had been pretty thoroughly ransacked, and the
above mentioned articles carried off. The "coolness" of the performance
will appear from the fact that at MR. SHEPHERD's, the burglars tarried in
the kitchen long enough to partake quite liberally of supper that had been
left on the table. No clue to the guilty parties has been obtained, but it
is thought that they were "tramps", connected in some way with the show that
visited Chariton on that day.
