The Chariton Patriot
Chariton, Iowa
July 21, 1875

MR. H.W. ELLIOTT, one of Russell's enterprising business men, and Post
Master at that place, has bought the residence and lots of MR. D.F. COMSTOCK
and will soon build a large brick store house near the residence.

DR. H. HEED and family left on Monday of this week for Amherst,
Massachusetts, where the doctor has connected himself with a health
institution of some kind, and where he expects to reside permanently in the
future.

DR. P.E. MINCKLER, formerly of Marshall county, of this State, has located
in Chariton with headquarters at Gibbon's Drug Store. His professional card
will appear next week.

The new sidewalk mentioned last week in front of Hatcher's and Leinen's is
being extended entirely to the south-west corner of the square. This is a
good improvement, and speaks well for the enterprising west side business
men.

MR. W.C. GARRETT of Pleasant Tp. returned last week from a ten days visit at
Dubuque and other points in the north part of the State. He reports "things
all right up there, and the crops looking much better than in this section.

DR. D.Y. COLLINS returned last Thursday from Des Moines and Indianola,
having been absent for a week at the meeting of the State Medical Society,
and visiting his sister, MRS. LUCY JAY, at the latter place.

One night last week a party of three or four burglars entered the house of
MR. DOUGLASS, living a few miles west of town, but were discovered and
driven out before securing much if any plunder. Some of the party are in
Chariton. Keep your shot guns loaded.

How is this for an "oldest inhabitant" item? MR. E. JACKSON, who lives a
few miles south west of Chariton, is 40 years old, and both he and his wife
were born in Iowa, and in the same county. He has always lived in this
State, and has seven children all born here.

A postal card can be sent for two cents from any part of the United States
to Germany, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France, Great Britain
Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Roumania, Russia,
Servia, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey and Egypt.

MR. S.H. VAN SICKLE had $40.00 stolen from his safe in the rear part of his
store on show-day, last week. The theft was committed while the procession
was passing along the street, and while all the clerks were at the front
door, looking out. The thief, of course, was at the rear of the building,
ready to enter when the opportunity offered.
