'THE POOR FARM'

A Splendid Showing For The Year 1874.

---------------------------

To the Editor Patriot and Leader: Dear Sirs:--
Perhaps it might be interesting to the citizens of Lucas county to know
something about the operation and condition of the county farm and the
inmates. There were, at the commencement of the year, ten persons receiving
support at the farm. There were nine admitted during the year, making a
total for the year of nineteen. There were eleven discharged during the
year, leaving eight remaining at the present time to be cared for, four
males and four females. The males are more or less mentally deranged, one
of the females is demented to some extent, the rest are not able to do much;
two of them being about helpless. The general health of the inmates being
tolerably good.

There are two horses, 28 head of cattle, 38 head of hogs, about 1,500
bushels of corn, 275 bushels wheat, 76 bushels of oats, 39 bushels of
timothy seed, 41 bushels of buckwheat, about 50 of potatoes, and about 30
tons of hay, now on the farm, with a good supply of canned fruit and garden
vegetables of all kinds. There has been sold, during the year, hogs, grain
and hay to the amount of $636.98. There has been sold during the year,
butter, eggs and lard to the amount of $37.11 over and above supplying the
meals of the farm. The value of the stock and produce now on the farm, as
estimated, compared with report for 1873, is $1,063.50 more. Add to this
the amount of the stock and produce sold, $674.09, making a total net
product for the year, 1874, $1,737.59.

There has been made for the inmates four shirts, four pair of pants, three
pair socks, one coat, thirteen dresses, seven waists, 6 chemises, 5 pair of
stockings, 2 pair of drawers, three aprons, three shirts, four comforts,
eight pillow slips and seven sheets. There has been considerable permanent
improvements made upon the farm all together, we doubt whether there is a
better and more judiciously managed farm officiating with all the charms of
home comfort in Lucas county, and offered satisfaction in presenting it to
the citizens of the county, from evidence of their humane and kind regard
for the welfare and happiness of those unfortunates of our race who have to
seek protection and support from the public charity.
