Page 1Safeguard: News reached here this morning, Oct. 26, telling of the death of W. M. McCormick, which occurred at his home in Letts about 9:15 this morning. Mr. McCormick had been in poor health and a great sufferer for a number of years and was taken seriously ill about two weeks ago and gradually grew worse until death relieved him of his suffering. William M. McCormick was born in Harrison county, Ohio, July 3, 1856, and lived in his native state until fourteen years of age when he came to Iowa, settling at Columbus City, Iowa, where he attended school and after clerked for a number of years in the general store of Colton & Garner. In 1882 he, in company with W. H. Hughes, engaged in the mercantile business at this place. In 1897, Mr. Hughes sold his interest in the store to Ed Jones and in 1888 Mr. McCormick sold to his partner and a few months later was chosen manager of the co-operative store at Letts. He continued in this position until 1891 when the Letts bank was established and Mr. McCormick was chosen as cashier, a position he has since held. As a business man Mr. McCormick has always enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all. Was a good neighbor, a faithful Husband and a kind father. May 17, 1878, Mr. McCormick and Miss Lizzie D. Reiner were united in marriage. This union was blessed with two sons, Edwin R. and Max, who with the wife and mother are left to mourn the loss. Of his father's family he leaves three brothers, J. T., of Columbus City; J. B., of Syracuse, N. Y. and R. A. of Cadiz, Ohio.
