Biography reproduced from page 432 of the History of Kossuth and Humboldt Counties, Iowa published in 1884:

Rochus Hartman was born March 17, 1839, in Austria. He came to America in 1865, stopped awhile in Illinois, working by the day, then removed to Clayton Co., Iowa, and in 1875, bought eighty acres on section 17, township 96, range 29, where he now resides. He was married May 22, 1865, to Mary Herman, also a native of Germany. They have three children—Herman, Kresenzia and John. Mr. and Mrs. Hartman are members of the Catholic Church. In politics, he is a democrat.
