Susan Rogers, 79, of Iowa City, passed away on August 20, 2024 at her residence.
Susan was born on November 7, 1944 in Turlock, California to Homer and Elizabeth (Burke) Huxtable. Her first year was spent on her grandparents’ farm near Turlock while her father served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific. In 1946, the family moved to Modesto, California where she attended school graduating from Downey High School and Modesto Junior College. She received her B.A. in history and M.L.S. in Library Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1967, Susan moved to Salt Lake City to work at the University of Utah library. On August 31, 1968 she married Earl Rogers in Salt Lake City. In 1970 the couple moved to Iowa City where Earl joined the staff at the Special Collections Department at the University of Iowa library. Susan later joined the library staff at the State Historical Society of Iowa where she worked for 21 years, retiring to care for elderly relatives. She also assisted her husband in compiling bibliographies on agricultural history.
During retirement, Susan and Earl traveled extensively and shared a passion for birding. Among their favorite trips were Patagonia, South Africa and China. Susan enjoyed Senior College and Senior Center classes and volunteered for the VNA. She also worked on family history and had a passion for reading (especially mysteries.)
Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl and her brother, Howard Huxtable.
Per Susan’s request, private graveside services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice or the Iowa City Public Library.
