God’s Challenge; America’s Answer
Patriotic Day at the Methodist Church in Colfax Attended by Many People
“Keep The Home Fires Burning”
Twenty-Six Young Men Already Gone From This Church – Service Flag is Dedicated
Despite the blizzard Sunday the home fires were burning bright and warm in the Methodist church of Colfax.
The morning discourse was “God’s Challenge to America” and the evening subject, “America’s Answer.” The themes were fitly chosen and ably presented. Rev. Cannom is a “tower of strength” in a patriotic address.
He pointed out what is our national greatness, what is our mission as a nation, why we are and should be broad and charitable toward all nations, why we should stand as a stone wall against all encroachments upon human liberty, for that is our birthright, and especially why we should be for France and England in this great struggle, for their defeat would mean our undoing.
So dramatic and ardent was his arraignment of the alien enemy that the great audience broke into ‘amens’ and prolonged cheers. He quoted from Senator Kenyon, Ambassador Girard and Dwight Hillis to show the awfulness of the situation abroad, the wanton destruction of life, mutilating of children, the outraging of women in Belgium, France and other countries, the ruthless destruction of property, with no regard whatever for the Red Cross, the Y.M.C.., hospital ships or defenseless, helpless peoples.
They by quoting from General Pershing, he proved that the American soldiers in foreign fields were conducting themselves as real men of whom we need not be ashamed, in fact, that they were a credit to our nation and our homes.
Five young men from John Hahn’s Sunday school class, with whom several of the boys were associated when here, sang “Keep the Home Fires Burning.” At the close of the evening hour service flag was dedicated to the twenty-six young men who have gone. A beautiful silk field of pure white and broad red margin was hung before the audience and then as Miss Eudora Day, teacher of the Wesleyan class, read the names of the men and their present location, a member of the class went forward and pinned onto the flag a blue star in which was the name of the soldier worked in silk.
