TROUBLE AT MAQUOKETA CHUTE

There was trouble some days ago near Maquoketa Chute, during which one man struck another with an axe. A man with whom the Woodenware company made a contract to furnish the company with hardwood logs, was rafting the logs down the river and in going over a dam near Buena Vista the raft broke up and a portion of the logs floated down stream. As they were passing the island a man named Wolf came out in a skiff and caught a large number of them and pulled them into a slough near the island. The contractor learned that Wolf had the logs and a day or two afterwards, with several of his men, called on Wolf and demanded the logs. Wolf declined to give them up and seizing an oar declared he would brain the first man who attempted to take them. At the same time a man named Welsh, raised an axe and struck Wolf on the side of the head with the back of the axe and knocked him down. Wolf got up and made a rush for Welsh, when the latter struck him again with the axe, knocking him out. He recovered consciousness, but it is understood Wolf was seriously, but not dangerously injured. No arrests have yet been made.
