George Washington Smith born 1845 in Butler Twsp, Miami Co Indiana, came to Benton Co, LeRoy Twsp Iowa in 1855 with his parents. When he was 11years old, his mother died. At the age of 19 years, he volunteered as a soldier in the Civil War. 25 Jan 1864, I, George W. Smith, (son of Charles D. Smith & Mary Ann Cooper) volunteer to serve for a period of three years, unless sooner dishcharged by the proper authority. Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing as are or may be established for volunteers........ Sworn and subscribed at Marengo, Iowa Co. Iowa this 25th day of Jan 1864, before N.C. Martin, Lieut. 28th Iowa Infantry and Recruiting Officer.
George was killed in the Battle of Opequan Creek, Winchester, VA. Sept 19 1864.
