John F. Baughman, Hinkletown & North English; 1901 Bio

Information from 1901 obituary, North English Record; 1915 Diwiddie History of Iowa County Volume II, p. 86; 1874 Iowa County Atlas, map of Hinkletown; Ferris Scrapbook.

Dr. J. F. Baughman was born December 23, 1835, in Muskingum County, Ohio. He was married to Margaret A. Hickman November 21, 1857, in Conshocton County, Ohio. This union was blessed with five children, Oliver F., Flora J., Phoebe E, August B., and Frank. All are living except Flora J., who died in early childhood. He moved to Decatur Co., Iowa in the fall of 1860, where he lived and practiced medicine until the fall of 1872. He then moved to Iowa County, serving as physician and surgeon at Henkletown (Hinkletown,) in the southeast corner of Fillmore Township, until 1879. He was also the postmaster at the Foote P.O. at Henkletown and lived continuously in the county with the exception of an eight years residence at Kinross, Keokuk County, Iowa, moving from there to North English in February 1887. He served as the second mayor of North English after its incorporation in 1892. His son, Oliver F. Baughman, was also a mayor of North English, postmaster of Kinross and served as the treasurer of Iowa County.

J.F. Baughman united with the Church of Christ at Fairview, east of Henkletown, February 3, 1877. When he moved to North English he changed his membership to the church there. He has been a constant sufferer for the last three months until death came to his relief August 29, 1901, at the age of 65 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
The burial service was held from the Christian Church at 2:30 PM Saturday, August 31, 1901, conducted by S.P. Telford, assisted by Daniel Miller of the Dunkard Church. The remains were laid to rest in the North English cemetery.

In the death of Dr. Baughman an old landmark has been removed. The public has lost a faithful servant, the community a worthy citizen and the family a faithful husband and devoted father.
