Former Battle Creek Resident Dies December 13
Following is the obituary of Almond F. Conant of Corydon, Iowa, former resident of Battle Creek, Iowa: Almond F. Conant, son of Freeman C. and Alice Stryker Conant, was born in Wilton, Iowa, August 15, 1874. Mr. Conant was graduated from the Commercial Department of Wilton German-English College in 1896. He received a certificate for ten years of service with the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department. For some years Mr. Conant was in the hardware business with his father which he continued after his father’s death. Later he lived in Battle Creek, Iowa, for about 25 years, where he engaged in farming and was later connected with several business firms here. From there he retired to acreage at New Boston, Iowa, in 1931, and moved to Corydon in 1938, where he died in the hospital Saturday, December 13, 1958, at the age of 84 years. Mr. Conant never married. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Corydon. His parents were among the old-time residents of Wilton; his father came to Wilton in 1867, following service in the Civil War. His grandfather, Rev. A. W. Stryker, was pastor of the Wilton Methodist Church in the early 60’s. Survivors are one brother, Rev. P. M. Conant, and one nephew, Preston S. Conant, both of Muscatine, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, December 15, in a funeral home in Corydon. Graveside services were held Tuesday, December 16, at the Conant family lot in Oakdale Cemetery at Wilton.
