Claus Rochau
born in 1842, Germany

Claus Rochau, a well-known and respected citizen of Galva Township, resides on section 3. He has been a resident of the township for fifteen years, and is one of the old settlers. Mr. Rochau was born in Germany, near Holstein, in 1842, a son of Hans and Catherine Rochau, both natives of Germany, where they lived and died. Our subject was reared and educated in his home country, but in 1860 left the home of his youth and crossed the great waters to America. His first location was in Davenport, Iowa, where he engaged in agricultural labors until 1877, when he came to Idaho, at which place he has since remained, residing on the same farm he purchased at the time of location. Mr. Rochau now owns one of the substantial farms of the township and has accumulated a large fortune. The farm is 640 acres of well-improved land, on which a farm residence is, barn and outbuildings, grove and orchard. He carries a fine stock of horses and other stock, all of which are cared for in the best possible manner. The Northwestern Railroad runs through the farm, enhancing its value. Our subject was married in Davenport, Iowa, to Minnie Bower, a native of Germany, who came to America with her parents when she was young. She was the daughter of Carl Bower, who lived in Davenport and then came to Iowa County. Ten children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Rochau, seven girls and three boys: Gusta, Herman, Annie, Lizzie, Minnie, Emma, Willie, Johnnie, Katy and Alice. In politics Mr. Rochau is a Democrat, and supporter. He is honest and an upright citizen.
