Charles J. Berte passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, December 25, 2011, Christmas evening in his home where he and his wife, Shirley began their journey of life 55 years ago.
A Funeral Mass of The Resurrection will be celebrated by Rev. James Tigges on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livermore, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday at The Lentz Funeral Home in Algona from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service.
Charles Julius Berte was born to Nicholas and Josephine (Dentzer) Berte on October 3, 1931 in his home at Irvington in Kossuth County.
He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in St. Joseph, Iowa in 1950. Charles entered the military service during the Korean Conflict serving from 1952-1954. Charles farmed with his father until 1956 when he married Shirley Ann Kliegl on June 20, 1956, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore, Iowa.
To this union they were blessed with four children, Susan (Mark) Bormann, Livermore, Thomas (Sharon) Berte, Livermore, Sheryl (Paul) Jacobson, Ottosen, and Carol (David) Edge, Ft. Dodge.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Laubenthal and Delores (Richard) Arndorfer of Bancroft; brothers, John (Janine) Berte, Livermore, Edmund(Mary Ann) Berte, Algona and Nicholas (Nancy) Berte, Algona.
Charles' greatest joy was farming which he enjoyed for 55years. He fed cattle in the early years of farming and truly loved caring for pigs in his farrow to finish hog operation. He loved nice tractors and equipment, cars and trucks. Charles served as Director of the Bode Elevator and Farm Egg for 19 years, was a member of the Otto Field Post No. 415 of The American Legion for 50 years and was also a Director for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livermore for many years. He enjoyed following his grandchildren in their many activities including ball games, concerts and recitals. He loved gardening and yard work and going to casinos with his wife, family and friends.
His greatest love was for his beloved wife, Shirley, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he cared for so deeply.
