Matt J. Shine
(March 22, 1886 – July 29, 1922)

Obituary – Matt Shine
The news of his death came as a surprise to the people of this vicinity as few knew of his illness. He was taken ill last winter with influenza and did not regain his health, although he was up and about most of the time. He was taken to Rochester two weeks before his death in the hope that the specialists there could locate his ailment, but after being there a few days he was told they could do nothing for him, and he passed away as above stated, at 11:45, July 29.
Matt J. Shine was born in Lizard Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa, on Mar. 22, 1886, and passed away at Rochester, Minn., July 29, 1922.
In June 1920, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Frances Quigley of Milford, who is left to mourn his passing. Besides his wife, there are left to mourn him two step-children, Maxine and Louis Quigley, his mother, Mrs. Anna Shine, and sister, Miss Nellie Shine. His wife and sister were with him at the time of his death. Seven years ago he went to Arnold’s Park, where he operated a motor boat on Lake Okoboji during the summer months, usually returning to Gilmore City for the winter. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was of a quiet, unassuming nature, and made friends in all classes, all of whom will be grieved to learn of his untimely death. Funeral services were held from St. John’s church, solemn high mass being read by Father Murtagh, and the remains were laid to rest beside those of his father. Relatives and friends attending the funeral from a distance were: John P. Gratton and Mrs. E. J. Lynch of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lynch, Mrs. Glenn Miller, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. O’Hearn, Mr. and Mrs. Omar O’Hearn and four children of Spencer; Mrs. P. J. Griffin of St. Paul, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wells of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Keenan and three children, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Coughlin of Fort Dodge; Modesta, Mary and Marcelia Kelley of Emmetsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Siegle and Miss Rhoda Karnes of Winnebago, Minn.; Mrs. Joe Lahiff of Clare; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Kenney of Armstrong, and Gail Parker of Arnold’s Park.
