John Rhyne, who expired very suddenly at his home here last Thursday evening after an illness extending over several months, was born in Blunt County, Tennessee, January 10, 1846. Was a soldier of the civil war, belonging to a union cavalry regiment, remaining with same until the close of the war. He came to Iowa near forty years ago, locating in Wayne township. October 15, 1895 he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Woodruff, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Rhyne came to Winfield fifteen years ago where they had a nice home, but the exposure of soldier life had undermined his system and his health had not been good for quite a number of years. The past winter he was confined to his home by sickness that finally resulted in his death.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the M. E. church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. B. Cadwall, before a congregation of old neighbors and friends, after which the remains were taken to Asbury cemetery near the old home in Wayne township and laid to rest. The pall bearers were selected from among his old comrades who had marched under the Stars and Stripes in the cause of Freedom and battled for Principle.
