IRISHTOWN
“Irishtown” is the colloquial name for Woodlawn, which was in the area which is now the south edge of Mt. Pleasant. The “town” was platted in 1856 by J. C. Lockwood and Robert Graham, but it was never developed. The town was labeled Irishtown because of the large number of Irish settlers who lived there and worked in the quarry run by John Winters. Stone for the Mississippi River bridge at Burlington was supplied by Winter’s quarry.
