JOHN MELAND

John Meland was born in Hjelmeland, Stavanger, Norway, August 10, 1855, and passed away at his home in Radcliffe, Iowa, March 15, 1936. He had reached the age of 80 years, 7 months and 5 days.

His parents died in Norway and he had two sisters and one brother, all who preceded him in death.

On June 29, 1880, he was united in marriage to Ellen Helgeland. To this union were born nine children, of whom four preceded their father in death. Those who are living are Mrs. Porter Thompson of Story City, Mrs. Julia M. Roby and Mrs. Ellen Johnson, both of Radcliffe, Mrs. J. C. Sovde of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. J. F. Strader of Marathon. Also 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. John Meland came to Leland, Ill., from Norway in 1882, and moved the same year to Radcliffe, on a farm three miles southeast of town, where he toiled early and late for comfort of his family, always in good spirits thru all hardships. Later he moved to town, where he resided until the time of his death.

His life was spent in rearing his family to a Christian way of living, always taking them to church and Sunday school, and in the home a family altar was established, which still remained at his death.
