Johnston T. Brown, Hancock Co. Pioneer Died Monday, Jan. 27

Purchased Garfield Twp. Farm in 1868; Move Here With Family in 1881

Hayfield – Johnston T. Brown, Civil War veteran, and for more than 55 years a resident of Hancock County, passed away at his home on highway No. 18 near the Hayfield corner early Monday morning, Jan 20, 1936, after several months illness which gradually weakened his system. He passed peacefully away after a valiant fight.

Mr. Brown was born at Johnston, Jefferson County, New York, Oct 11, 1843, and was 92 years, 3 months and 9 days of age at time of death.

His family moved to Kankakee, Ill., when he was a small boy and it was there that he enlisted in Co. G, 138th Illinois Infantry, and was sent at once to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., to assist in quelling guerilla warfare at that point. He saw considerable service but no major engagements and was honorably discharged in October, 1865.

He returned to Kankakee where on Feb. 11, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Farr, who preceded him in death in 1921. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are: Milo, on the farm; Mrs. Mona Lowe, Hayfield; Mrs. Myra Haskins of Sioux City and Mrs. Emma Davison, Menomonie, Wis. Nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Brown purchased a farm in Garfield Township in 1868 and in 1881 he came here with his family and has resided continuously on the same farm. His son, Milo and wife, grandson, Emory and wife and great granddaughter, Rachel Ruth, reside on the same farm. He was always a good neighbor and in the pioneer days, assisted many, who were worthy, in a substantial way. He was a kind husband and father, always looking towards the family happiness.

A short service will be held at the home at 1 o’clock Thursday. A public service at the M. E. Church at Garner at 2 o’clock with the Rev. T. Ernest Hoon, pastor of the church, in charge and interment will be made in the family lot at Concord cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his life mate and his grandson, Capt. Arthur Brown, who was killed in an airplane accident five years ago this month. The Garner American Legion will sound taps and fire the salute.
