Obituary.

Henry Staley was born in Schenectady county, New York, January 19, 1816, son of Oliver and Elizabeth Staley. His grandfather Staley settled in the state of New York in 1753. His mother died in 1820 leaving four children--Catherine, Ann, Henry and George. His father married again and to the second marriage were born five children--Alexander, Jonathan, Jennett, William and Jacob.

Henry Staley lived in has native state until 1855, when accompanied by his brother, George, came to Iowa and entered 100 acres of land in Story county and 420 in what was then called Webster county, Section 11, Ellsworth township, here he settled in 1856 and was his home until 1899 when he removed to Jewell.

He was a hard working man, and there are many evidences of his thrift and enterprise in Hamilton county. He was closely identified with all the various improvements of the county, and the development of its material resources were largely augmented by him. His general health was excellent, considering his advanced age, up to within three weeks of his death, when he sustained a fall breaking his hip, bringing suddenly the end of a long life. His last sickness was borne patiently and no complaint was ever heard to pass his lips. He remained conscious up to within three days of the end when he quietly passed away.

He was married in 1862 to Annete Wilkinson, a native of Vermont, to which marriage were born eight daughters: Hattie, Libbie, Nettie, Winnie, Carrie, Henrietta and two who died in infancy. Hattie died in 1889 and Nettie in 1897.

All his living children were present and cared for him in his last sickness.

He was born and reared in the Presbyterian church. Rev. Sears, the Presbyterian minister of Williams, officiated in the funeral services, and his remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery at Jewell.
